Das Schloß Sparrenberg aka die Sparrenburg, is a fortress in Bielefeld, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Northwestern Germany, situated on the Sparrenberg hill in the Teutoburg Forest. Its current appearance mainly originates in the 16th and 19th century. The castle is considered to be Bielefeld’s landmark. It was erected sometime before 1250 by the counts of Ravensberg to guard the Bielefeld Pass over the Teutoburg Forest, as well as acting as the ruling seat of the counts, and as protection for the city. The above-ground parts of the castle can be visited year-round, free of charge. The rest can be visited daily from April to October, including the ascent of the 37 m tower and the front part of the 285 m subterranean corridor. The northwestern part of the underground corridor is not accessible with the exception of 3 tours per year, as it is home to bats. An attraction is the annual Sparrenburgfest held on the last weekend of July, where carnies and merchants re-enact the medieval way of life.
